A Simple Messenger in PHP

Hello all!

Well, firstly i´ll say "sorry my english", because i´m still studying english here... lol

Let´s go, i´ll try to explain my doubt...

I´m trying to made a "simple messenger in PHP" like a simple chat for two people...
Think you are visiting a Website, and there you can see who´s on-line... then, you can click on his name, and invite the person to chat with you. When you click on his name, a warning appears, and the person can say yes or no. if the choice is Yes, then we can chat...

Someone have any idea to help me?
I just don´t know how start to made that system...

Well, i´m a beginner / intermediate programmer in PHP / Mysql, but i have some books, and i´m reading a lot of articles about PHP, and training over 2 hours a day... i know, i´m learning well... could you help me?

there are at least three ways on how to do this
1. using the IRC functions(you can find them in the manual)
2. using sockets and conecting to server(made by you) to transmit and receive messages
3. using mysql to store the messages and reading them.

I didn't used the irc functions before but they would be my first choice ... at least untill I'll find out how fast they are.
