Problems encoding text to utf8 or Unicode

I'm using textfiles to include content into a flash site I'm doing.

It's working fine except for foreign characters like our swedish å, ä and ö. They won't show up when I include them.

I got the tip to save my textfiles in Unicode or Utf8 and that worked out just fine as long as I save them in notepad.

When I'm trying to save them through my php script it doesn't work. I found the commands urlencode() and utf8_encode() and tried to aply them to my strings and then save them but that didn't work either. That just made those characters show up like ä and other similar codes.

Anyone who happens to know how to convert a file or part of a file into a correct utf8 format like the one notpad saves into?

Notepads utf8 saves and unicode saves happen to be the only one working in my Flash movie.

i had a similar issue before with javascript menus. i read the unencoded data out of a database back then and applied utf8_encode() after receiving it. it worked just fine actually. (see the javascript window in the top frame at http://www.fischer-ski.com/de/alpine/index.php - you will see the working german umlauts)

i am not sure how this works with flash exactly, but basically you also have to enter the following meta tag in the html header so the utf8 is being handled right:
