uploading multiple files in one window

hey all. happy new year! kind of late i know..but haven't been on in awhile

anyways. on to the point.

i was wondering if there is anything out there that lets you do multiple file uploads....by this i mean opening up the upload dialogue box in windows and selecting 20 or so files to upload.

i can do this by having multiple upload boxes, but i just want 1 box, that you can upload a bunch of files with.

haven't seen anything like this..so i know its probably wishfull thinking but i thought i would try anyway.

btw...this is for an image gallery manager. and..if this type of thing doesn't exist..how do other sites manage their galleries?

i was thinking uploading via ftp to a dir..and then running a php script that detects that dir..adds to database and then generates all the thumbnails for viewers (the end result will be in flash - so thumbnail generation has to occur before hand with GD)

The browser only allows the user to select one file at a time.

You can setup an FTP directory and do it that way.

You could do something with zip files, but that adds a level of complexity for you and the user.

"Gallery" has a nifty Java App called GalleryRemote (only works with Gallery I believe) that allows a user to select multiple files and uploads them to the site. So you could create your own Java app to interface with your gallery.

The way that most galleries and online photo developers work is by having a downloaded app - be it an activex control or similar that allows extra functionality.

Being able to do this out of the box would be a complete security risk - would you like it if a website could read your HDD and upload what it wants - all at the same time ?
