Methinks comp.os.vms isn't moderated 🙂; I just wish the laddie hadn't broken the thread with the original post or we'd have known what it was originally about.
Hey,
You mentioned something about 'breaking off the thread' so thought I would post this if you missed it:

WTG, Piersk! And a good link, too.... 🙂

Ok, just in case anyone wants a link to my reply, take a look here
You know, I was just refreshing my memory of what the PHP license actually says, and I noticed that - unlike the GPL - it doesn't require you to make the source code to it or derived products available. Kind of refreshing, that. Ditto for Zend itself, which is no doubt why that particular decision was made (Zend Studio is closed source).
The PHP license is derived from the (modified) BSD license, I suppose. At least it runs on similiar lines.
So does that mean that, technically, PHP is not open source.
However, this still doesn't affect what the guy on the newsgroup was saying, since he has the wrong end of the stick about what open source actually means.
Nope, considering that the modified BSD license is an open source license, and the PHP license is listed as one as well.
onrightclick = "alert('This software is not open source mwahahaha');return false"
Haha that made my day good effort 🙂
Have they not heard of "View source" or simply the disabling of javascript?
Well, you can always print a hardcopy of your HTML and JS, then lock it in a safe. Should be pretty closed after that :p
I don't see the big deal with JavaScript...but ActiveX is scary...
13% of users supposedly have JS turned off.

Probably another 18 percent can't see meaningful error messages 'cause they deleted their "teddy bear" icons....

98% of people that post in forums think they are better than most other people.

No, PHP itself is still open source - it just means that software derived from it can be closed if the owners of the derived software so wish.
You know how smart the average person is? By definition, half of 'em are dumber than that.
