I was thinking about creating an online brochure making system that would produce pdfs (offset press quality) for printing. It would, of course come with a slough of fancy (horrible) clip art silhouettes in order to produce generic brochures along the lines of the kind you will find at your nearest governmental office of any sort.

Of course, I was thinking they would be useful in the office place so you could crank out a brochure quickly entitled:

"Office Politics: sit down and shut up unless you really have something good to offer"

or

"Finance: maybe you didn't get that raise because you sit around and surf phpbuilder.com all day"

A way to avoid the direct confrontation...say it with a brochure... 😉

ps: well, maybe that isn't open source, but i'm feeling a little kooky today...

Could be really cool, but time-consuming. Depends on how fancy you want to make it and what your input format is.
I wrote a little script that takes an XML input file and converts it into PDF files (w/ graphics, bookmarks, etc...) in order to automate the creation of a user manual, and enforce document heirarchy at the same time. However, it took a while to code, mostly due to annoyingness and difficulty-of-use (opposite of ease-of use? 😃) of PDFlib via PHP.
