Trying to figure out how to code this...

i'm writing a free-for-all style link management system for my website. What i'm working on right now is adding links to the system. I can already add Catagories and subCatagories. On the add a link page I have 2 dropdown boxes. One of them displays main catagories, the other displays subcatagories. What I want to do is either

1: only display subcatagories that go with the main catagory selected in the main catagory dropdown box ( kinda like on the ATI Driver download site...but that's Javascript as well and i don't know if it's dynamic. )

2: Do away with the main dropdown box and use an SQL query to determine which subCats go with which main cat. and display is something like

MainCat - subCat
Bit Torrent - Trackers
Bit Torrent - Clients

the only problem is that I need to pass along several variables about which catagory you've selected and as far as I know / can remember you can only have one value="whatever" tags inside of a <option> tag. Am i wrong or how should i go about doing this?

If anyone wants to see code / db structure just leme know and i'll show it to ya...

Well, since I like to have multiple levels of categories in one table...this works fine for me making one option box

main cat
---sub 1
---sub 2
main cat
---sub 3
---sub 4

You can do the same with multiple tables, but have to get creative with the value. Put something like
m(id) for main
s(id) for sub or table 1

then when you get the $_POST
do a substr() to find the correct type and a substr to extract the id to store.

The other way would be to have 2 option boxes with javascript on the first box to submit the page to dynamically (w/ php of course!) create the sub-categories.

yeah i'm using 3 diff tables for this app. 1 for main cats, 1 for subcats, and one for links....not sure how i gotta cross-refrence the 2 i guess.

2 ways

in links
have a cat_id and sub_id in case they're using either one or

cat_id and type_cat where it lists the id and links to the correct table.

I'm assuming you've already linked sub to cat table

if not, add a cat_id to sub to link it to the correct one.
