Upgrade Php

Is there a way to upgrade PHP without having to recompile?

I am running 4.2.2, the reason I want to upgrade is because I want to use the mysql_ping() function however I get an error

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_ping()

I am running Redhat 2.4.20-2.48smp
