need help with session_start()

i am getting an error that says Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent

and

Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent

how can these be fixed?
any ideas?

you must call session_start() before anything is sent to the browser (including whitespace).
