ie crashes sometimes.. any ideas?

i have a form that people fill out and it is submitted into a database. there are 3 basic aspects to the form.

1: The Form
2: Preview the info
3: "Thanks" and submit into database.

For some reason when I hit "preview" and go to the 2nd part to preview the data, IE will crash on me and give me a "Would you like to notify microsoft of the error" alert box.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm totally clueless. It seems to work 3 or 4 times in a row, but then the next time... I hit "preview" and it doesn't open the next page, just quits.

I'd appreciate any advice/comments/feedback.

A bit more info may be helpful.

Is this under test conditons on your on pc as a local server, or over the internet?

Does the page have any java/dhtml (if so, especially if it writes to objects on the page)?

From a cold boot, run the test page, observe the title bar of IE. Do the fonts suddenly get smaller at any stage?

Do you have an application that shows how low on system resources you are when it happens?

I have a freeware find/replace package (actually it is quite good, coz it looks like a search (like google) engine is use) called InfoRapid Search and Replace, and that has a warning bar that gives you an idea how stretched windows is.

IE DOES have a memory leak, which can be quite bad depending on what you are doing, which eventually causes it to go t*ts up.

if anything... could PHP be screwing up? is there a log-file somewhere that i can see that could help me?

we posted close to the same time.... so here's to answer your questions:

everything is setup on a domain and it does have java. i don't know if it would be windows resources or not. my machine is a p4, 2.8ghz with 1.5gig ram. of course if ie has a memory leak, that might be the issue. the forms are semi-large. it's basically a simple content management system for articles online. it is probably processing about 1000-2000 characters in the overall form.

If the java is simple, that may not be it. However, it IS your local machine that is the problem, but of course anyone else with IE may well experience the same problem when on your site.

The speed of your CPU, memory size etc, are no help in this, as it is not those resources at issue.

IE has a problem letting go of java variables. In my recent past I used a DOM/Java menu system that as you used it, the problem got worse. In the end the writer posted some extra code to reduce the problem, although the cure lies in a new release of IE (IE 7?) which some MS staffers have said will not be legacy (ie will not work on old OS's).

In effect, when java is run, the variables are supposed to be released, but IE doesn't always do this, so you need to release them or set them to null. Needless to say, Mozilla/Netscape do not have this problem.

wow. any idea when ie 7 will be released? i'm not into java that much, but i do have a script i use on the preview page. this sounds like it could be it.

i'm going to strip the javascript from the form completely and see if it still gives me the same problems.

on a clean shutdown/startup, opened IE and the exact same problem happened. i noticed no changes in the title bar.

you are my hero for the day. it seems to be the javascript... i had two extra vars that were assigned to 3 parts of the form and should have only been assigned to 1 part. thats what i get for copy & paste.
