Upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3.4 problems

I have Win98SE, Apache 2.0.40 and php 4.2.2. All works fine, but I wanted to more closely reflect my web server which has 4.3.4 now. I note some new functions, one of which would be real handy for me.

So, heart heavy with fear (remembers hassle of installing the trio before), I backup the php directory, and the php.ini file. Shut the server down.

I install the new package. First time by hand, second time with the installer.

Copy across the php4ts.dll file to the Windows directory. Edit the php.ini file to put the document_root in as before.

Restart Apache. Error. Cannot load d:/php/sapi/php4apache2.dll into server. The file is there. That is where it was for 4.2.2.

Restored backups. All OK. What did I do wrong this time 😕

I assume that the PHP code is C:\PHP or a subdirectory of C:\

Is that right?

If so, this bit ...

d:/php/sapi/php4apache2.dll into server

... needs correcting in the APACHE config file (httpd.conf).

FYI: Look for ...

LoadModule php4_module

... my file says ...

LoadModule php4_module C:/PHP/SAPI/php4apache.dll

Make sure you test/restart the server after.

See if that's it.

Windows, PHP, APACHE, etc are all on D, which is my raid array. C is just a small boot drive.

The funny thing is, Apache was already set up and running fine with php 4.2.2 on the d drive in the D:\php directory.

The directory structure for 4.3.4 is the same as 4.2.2, so a simple installation should have been all that was necessary.

Ah well.

It's morning here, so I'm going to give it another go!

I was wrong about the error message. It flashes up so fast I assumed it to say what I gave above. Instead, this is what it says:

Apache.exe: module "c:\php4build\snap\sapi\apache2handler\sapi_apache2.c"
is not compatible with this version of apache.

Does this mean I need to re-install Apache, maybe a higher version (2.0.48)?

Hmm ... don't think so ... I'm running PHP 4.3.x on Apache 1.3.x ... so I can't see why you need to upgrade Apache.

Here's a couple more questions ...
Have you still got the old PHP on the system?
Is apache still looking for the old one, maybe?

I backed it up, removed it and installed the new php to the same directory name the old version used to be in (no old files there!).

Maybe this is just one of those v2 problems.

I've got v1.3.29 Apache, so I'll give that a try later.

Added later: v1.3.29 works fine. Weird 😕
