I am a new programmer wanting to learn php and build them into a text-style web game. I have the book, "PHP and MYSQL development" but when I put in the test code the code just renders in standard html, can someone tell me how I can test this stuff without putting it on a live server?

to parse php you HAVE TO use a "live server" by definition... you can install a server on your local pc though and try it there. for newbiews i recommend www.easyphp.org
