Why did you guys take to learning php?

for me i wanted to make a rpg with a battle engine database and everything, i learned the neccesary material when i was twelve and i never did make it, now i 13

Anyway, for me, I come from a database background, and I started because I wanted to make cleaner, more restricted front ends to my databases. From there, the sky was the limit, and I haven't looked back since 🙂

I was using perl and wanted something that was easier to embed into html and had built in database support.

I still use perl for server-side database administration but its php all the way on the web interfaces.

I wanted something more than HTML and Javascript.

At the time it was either ASP or PHP. I was always leaning towards ASP, but found i couldnt have the Server to run it so PHP was the only option that i knew of.

Our Website at work was growing and needed some type of backend for templating and things. I started to learn PHP and became fascinated and consumed by it. As with most everyone else, I've never looked back. Now I'm looking in starting a large personal project and getting a job in PHP etc...

i was interested in programming in eneral, though i knew nothing about it, and decided the best way to start was web programming. that led me to ASP, but my old Linux hacker friend pointed me in PHP's direction.

hmm, think it was cause I wanted to make up keep of my site easier and somehow figured learning some sorta programming language would do just that.. then I somehow learnt about PHP

i'm a designer...although i recently built a nice little cms i still wouldn't claim to know php...

however, i did think it would help me Kill Bill...

PHP is a good first language to learn, and that's what I did. Since then I've learnt some perl, Java and ASP, but PHP still does what I want it to with the minimum of faffing around.

Are you talking about languages in general or specifically web languages? Because if the former, then I disagree. I think C is the language that people should start with, basically because most modern languages are based on it.

Web languages I guess, I was really thinking of the progression HTML > Javascript > PHP.

If most people started off with other languages first, before learning PHP, we'd have less "what's wrong with my if statement" posts on this forum, that's for sure 🙂 Most of the questions are about basic programming, not PHP-specific.

It looks like most people are taking PHP as their first language. yikes! :-P

C is a great place to learn coding. The more languages you have under your belt before you start learning PHP the better, for sure.

PHP is not the first language I learnt, if you count the minimal Visual Basic that I learnt first, but I definitely know more about PHP. I learnt some minimal Pascal, but never actually coded in it.

I learnt PHP because I wanted to make a guestbook for my site...now I want to code a forum...strange how you take on these projects.

I learnt PHP first, cause I wasn't interested in non-web programming at the time, but I find that because I learnt PHP first it has been alot easier for me to learn C! 🙂

I got into PHP cause I have always been into computers. Since the age of like 11. I was always trying to make little programs in basic, and qbasic. I then moved into cobal for a school project and then C. I started messing with HTML the first day I got off the web. Then CSS. Then went to college for Web Design and Programming which Sprung me into the web programming world. ASP, Perl, PHP, Actionscript, Java, Javascript, ect. Just found that PHP was very easy to learn and yet such a powerful tool and is now my Lanugage of choice for the web!
