Trouble retrieving previous dates in SQL

I am trying to create a comic strip site for my friend, but I am having some problems in figuring a few things out. My friend wants it where he can add comics ahead of time and and just type in the date to be listed.

That is all okay. My problem though is, if he doesn't have a comic strip appearing for a certain day, say the weekends, how can I get it to stick with the last comic strip until it's time to switch to the new one?

An example being, if he has comic strips listed to appear on these days:

2004-01-22
2004-01-23
2004-01-26
2004-01-27

Now say today is 2004-01-25. How can I get it to display the comic from the 23rd until it's time for the next comic?

I am only used to grabbing specific values or just listing things out in an array. I just don't know how to get something equal to a date and if that date doesn't exist in the database, get the latest date that came before it.

I just hope this makes sense, hehe, not sure how else to explain it. Thanks in advance though if anyone can help.

I can't thank you enough! I worked so hard yesterday on trying to figure the solution out and researching. Looks like I was on the right track but I most likely never would've come to this as the answer. Still got a lot to learn, hehe.
