Apache 2 vrs 1.3

Given the choice for a db intensive site (with persistent db connections) is there a significant difference in performance between apache 2x and 1.3x.

Assume there is not a huge difference in performance with current versions.

The info I found saying 1.3 was much better with php was 'relatively ' old....
