Displaying specific rows by a column value?

At the moment, I have a bunch of rows that have been assigned a group number. For example, all pictures taken in California are group 1, city 2 are group 2, etc. So groupnumber for all pictures taken in Cali is 1...groupnumber for city2 is "2", etc.

Is there anyways I can store groupnumber = 1 into an array? And then groupnumber=2 into another array? All automated of course...I don't want to have to type in how many groups there are or make them increment by 1😃

You can get the MAX(groupnumber) in an sql query, then cycle through from 1 -> x and pull out any and all records from within that grouping.

How about something like:

$sql = "SELECT * FROM sometable ORDER BY groupnumber";
if (!$result = mysql_query($sql)) {
    echo "Could not run query ($sql): " . mysql_error();
    exit;
}
if (mysql_num_rows($result) < 1) {
    echo "No pictures match your query";
    exit;
}
while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) {
    $pics[$row['groupnumber']][] = $row;
}

print_r($pics);

Several ways come to mind. For example I didn't need the ORDER BY clause as I ended up created $pics but I initially planned on using the data directly (creating a huge $pics may waste resources) with a temp variable keeping track of what groupnumber we were at... but anyway the above is essentially what you asked for and will be a good start :-)

New problem time:

Taken from the php.net manual...

$a[0][0] = "a";
$a[0][1] = "b";
$a[1][0] = "y";
$a[1][1] = "z";

foreach ($a as $v1) {
   foreach ($v1 as $v2) {
       echo "$v2\n";
   }
}

Where it says echo, how to I print out $v1? I've got a similar situation where I want to print out both $v1 and $v2, but whenever I try to print out $v1 and $v2 where it says "echo", it just gives me "array" + the value.

$v1 is an array... which is why you have the second foreach loop. What do you expect it to print?

I wanted to print the value of $v1, which in this case would be "0" or "1".

You mean you want the array key (which is much different than the value as the values are a,b,c and d) so in that case you would do this:

foreach ($a as $v1) { 
   foreach ($v1 as $key => $value) { 
       echo "key: $key and value: $value\n"; 
   } 
}

No....that wasn't it, but I figured it out. This is what I was doing:

foreach ($group as $groupname=>$groupvalue)
	{
	foreach ($groupvalue as $key=>$value)
		{
		echo "<a href=\"imagesubmit.php?group=$groupname&id=$b[$key]\"><img src=\"$value\"></a>";
		}
	}
