displaying last 5 records

I want to display the last 5 records from the database

Now i can retrieve all ID's and get the last ID,
then when i could -4 the ID and display them it could be done.
but id's are beeing deleted now and then so this cannot be done that way.
like the last records are: id= 190,189,184,182,176....

how can i get that query?

If the id field is always incremental - even if some numbers are missed out due to deletion, then

SELECT * FROM table ORDER by ID DESC LIMIT 5

selects the entire table, reverse orders it by the ID field and then only returns the first 5 entries, which should be the 5 highest ID numbers.
