Problems with linking URL's

ok, I get users to fill in a form, they submit there details, including there web link.

I come to display the information that has been saved into my database into a table.

Email links, work perfect...heres the code for my url:

<a href=\"$url\" target=_blank>Link</a>

Now, when you come to click the link, it links as:

http://www.my-domain.com/www.userpostedlink.com

or, it can be:

http://www.my-domain.com/$url

(my-domian being, where the webpage with the information is)

Am I doind something wrong thats making the links go weird?

what you are posting must not be complete. If you are in a php string you need to escape both sets of quotation marks.

If you outputting straight html you need to have php open and close tages. In other words: <a href="<? echo $link; ?>">user submitted link</a>

When you are geting the mydomain.com/linkdomain.com that is usually caused by there not being an [url]http://[/url] in front of the link url, so it is assumed to be a file in the current directory.

Post enough of the code so we can see what is going on around it and we can probably give more specific help.
