taking only parts of a value

sorry for the unclear title, not quite sure how to say it in a short way...

hi all,

i have a variable $contents which holds a brief text description with html formatting and the html to call up a picture. I am creating an index of the different contents and need to only show the first sentance of the text (as in ends at the first full stop) and the removal of all html so that the formatting and the picture dont show up.

As ever i'm pretty sure the answers obvious but am getting increasingly fustrated and confused the more I think about it... any helpmuch appreciated 🙂

strip_tags() to get rid of the HTML, then find the first occurrence of ". " (note the space) with strpos() and use substr() to grab everything before that occurrence (return the whole string if it doesn't occur).
