Help With Creating A News Section

this is something im wanting to create in php but im really just a beginner

five latest news headlines with the latest showing an image, headline and small part of the story..... the other four just showing a headline and line of the story.

when a new story is added it moves into 1st position and the current storys move down a position

where can i find a really good tutorial on this...... ive been looking but i want something that will talk me through it all bit by bit

thats just displaying whats in the database and will constantly keep adding them at the bottom

thats not what i want though..

if u look at the link i sent ( http://www.popcop.co.uk/news.jpg) all i want is the 5 latest stories from the database with the very latest one showing also an image

also the description in the first one has just a small part and the description in the other ones is just a line

im really needing help with this

im not going to code it for you. you have the basic idea. now one problem your gonna have to fix first is that u need the new NEWS articles on top rather on bottem. theres quite a few ways of going about this.

think about your database structure. do u want to only ever have 5 articles? do u want to save the old articles or keep them in the database?

these are things you need to sort out. please try to code it even if it doesnt work its a start

i dont know where to go from here, im new to PHP and i really need a good tutorial for this.

im wanting to keep all the news stories as an archive

and im wanting to open the stoies in a pop up

i dont think theres a tutorial that gives you code for news thing :rolleyes: comon you sure as hell know where to go from here! you just told me what you wanted to do. now take each design step one at a time. If your new to php look for functions here

this is gonna take some effort. If ur wondering how to do "A" specific task then ask me. break it down. write out the steps on paper.

i dont know what functions do what ect ect...

will i need to set up my html page the way its to look with the a table with empty cells and i call the code into the cells, kinda like an iframe ?

if so hows this done?

thats good your first specfic question 😉 this is what i want to hear.

well thats say you have PHP code like below

and you want to put it into a table it would be something like this

popcop - my 2 cents: there are tons of good free news scripts at hotscripts, sourceforge and freshmeat. Find one that is close to want you want, figure out how it works and customize it. That will be an easier and quicker way of learning for you than trying to write one from scratch with limited knowledge.

Once you have the one you pick functional, and you understand the concepts behind it, then you can try writing one.

That is how I have learned php.
