Kind of tricky SQL question?

I do have:

$query = "select * from companies order by someField limit $offset, $limit";  

How can I please also add:

WHERE name LIKE '%" . $companyname . "%' " . $strCategory . $strTown

to the query?

What are $strCategory and $strTown? The where statement goes after SELECT FROM, but before ORDER BY
