Redirecting users using login ID

Hi y'all

Need a little help with this one...

I have a number of categories of users who login a members area via a database. At the moment the users are all being redirected to a single landing page when logging in.

What I would like to do is to send different user categories to different landing pages depending on the first 2 digits of their login ID eg.

CN12356 (CN being category 1)
FN325789 (FN being category 2)
TU3970 (TU being category 3)

(the following number of digits after the 2 category letters will not be constant)

can anyone point me in the right direction on how to call the first two digits in the username string so that they can have the relevant redirect instructions attached to them.

you can :

$landing_page = 'landing_'.substr($login_id,0,2).'.php';
header('Location: [url]http://www.yourserver.com/[/url]'.$landing_page);
exit;
