Hacking...

I would like to learn about cracking! BUT, not so I can crack(Even if I wanted to I would be far to scared that I would get caught!), but just so I understand how people could possibly gain access to my computer and such. And if someone did, how to know that they did, and how do defend properly against such an intrusion! Stuff like that. So what are some good resource for such information? Websites & Books would be nice 🙂

Script kiddies will try to gain access by brute force methods (spamming username/password pairs until one works), session hijacking, XSS. 'Real' hackers will exploit vulnerabilities in the actual server code (buffer overflows etc).

Google knows a hell of a lot more than me, so go ask 🙂

There are plently of books on hacking, online journals. You'd be suprised how much there. like suggested google is your friend.

Kevin Mitnick is known around the world for some of his hacks, though his book really isn't about hacks in particular, but more about the human element of things, and how to prevent social engineering attacks. All good reads IMHO.

hehe, I actually noticed that after I had some sleep. I was tired when I posted that, and I was just looking at a page called "Hacking Lexicon" so, yea... 😉

BTW, I'm extermely jealous of the shirt! Think I need to get something like that! Maybe a nice riddle one to confuse my non-geek friends! 😉

The geek shirt is next. I think it'll go good with my geek badge holder. But MythTv is sucking all of them money out of me at the moment, so it'll have to wait.

LOL you know whats funny? How many people get the difference between Hacker and Cracker wrong! Like search google for "Anti-Hacker"(with quotes) you get 149,000 results then search for "Anti-Cracker"(again, with quotes) you get only 815 results! Weird how so many people are against hackers and not many are against crackers 😕

Because of the media and (probably more so) Hollywood. Look at the film Hackers. That is a prime example. I would call myself a hacker cos I enjoy programming. But if I were to go up to your average Joe Public and said "Hi Joe, I'm a hacker" then he'd probably call (in the UK) the NHTC unit or (in the statse) the FBI. But if you go up to that same Mr Public and said "Hi I'm a cracker" then he'd go "Huh??".

It's why the term "geek" is becoming used more widely - because too few people know what a hacker is. Besides, strictly speaking, the word "hacker" is like the word "hero" - it's not really a term one can apply to oneself (see hero, sense 2).

If anything could be called a definitive definition of a hacker....

Yeah, but their ignorance is half the fun. You'd love some of the looks I get when I wear my hacker shirt to work.

LOL I can imagine! The only thing that shirt needs IMO is to have it say hacker on the back too, but alot bigger, so more people notice 🙂
