preg_replace reg expression driving me CRAZY!

i want to modify all pictures slightly eg:
"somefilename.jpg" with "./Images/somefilename.jpg"

and i wrote this to try do so - but i cant get it to work..

$mainHeader = preg_replace("/\"(.*).(jpg|gif|jpeg|png)\"/siU", "./Themes/$theme/$1.$2", $mainHeader);

Any help?

am i right in thinking i should use \1 & \2 instead?

as you can see - it almost works..but is a little f'ed up

Bored with the markup already, fickle mind.
You need to backslash the $ here's one of mine for replacing references to java class files to just the file name with no extention (how they'd be called)

$file=preg_replace("/^(.*)\.class$/","\$1",$file);

This is the only time I can remember using backreferences but it works fine.

Bleh...dont mean to be annoying, but you might be able to see why this is driving me crazy

$mainHeader = preg_replace("/\"(.*)\.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png)\"/siU", "\"./Themes/\$1.\$2\"", $mainHeader);

still isnt working properly..it's gotta be somthing small
my $'s are backslashed as you can see, but still no change to the output.
