Automatic e-mail?

I have an application that lets people schedule a reservation, however the client has requested an automatic e-mail be sent to them 60 and 30 days prior to the actual reservation date... if I have this date stored in the database is there a way a php script (or anything!) could detect the date and automatically call an email script without it being called by a browser?

You could setup a cron job that calls a php script to test the dates and if they are 30/60 days away send an e-mail.

So would my cronjob look like this if i wanted it to run every morning?

Run e-mail alert php script

0 0 * /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/admin/alerts.php

Assuming the directory and my alerts.php coding is correct this will work?

Yes, as long as you have the !# (bang) at the top plus the path to your php.exe or if you call php as

/path to php/php.exe /path/to/script/alerts.php

should work....I'd google it to make sure though.

As one fellow user pointed out in another thread (and I had never thought of this myself)...have a browser on the server (lynx for example) call up the page.
