Sessions - "Remember Me"

I have a large site that I built. It uses a regular DB driven user login with sessions ($_SESSION). Everything works great and has been for months. Thing is some people are wishing they didn't have to login each time they come to the site.

I was looking at my forum which is phpbb and they "seem" to use sessions too. But they have a "Remember Me" check box on login.

I'm trying to find out if there is a way to do this with sessions. I read somewhere that you can store the session as a cookie to be read again later, but I couldn't find any actual code for this. I seached all over this forum. If I missed it please point me there.

Or if there is a better way to do it please let me know. I may or may not be able to change the php.ini file. I'm still looking for it. 🙂

its a command that sets a session length for just this session. 🙂

One way to do this is, if they log in successfully and have checked the 'remember me' box, then store your own cookie (I would store the MySQL user record id). If the cookie is in there, log them in automatically.

You must use a Cookie you cannot use a Session no matter how long you set the Session till it expires as soon as the browser is closed the session dies.

nlhowell's idea sounds possible, no? Basically have an if statement for the session. If the cookie exist then set the session.
