MySQL STR_TO_DATE Probs

I have a MySQL DATE column.... and want to insert a date that is formated like YYYYddd where ddd is the day NUMBER of the year 1-366.

I know I can parse this out in PHP....but I keep trying to use this kind of insert query to to solution......I have tried every variation of ticks I know to exists and still get an error

INSERT  INTO daily_reports (data_date)  VALUES ( ( STR_TO_DATE(2003001,    '%j%Y' ) ) );

Any Ideas?

Actually Maybe this Can't Be done in SQL?

The description of STR_TO_DATE at the MySQL site says it returns a DATETIME type, not a DATE type, and since i am not specifying any time it will not calculate the date?

STR_TO_DATE() is available as of MySQL 4.1.1. If you are trying to invoke the function with 3.x, you will get an error.

Both arguments must be strings, so you need to put single quotes around them.

Your first argument looks like nonsense, and may evaluate to NULL.
