Using PHP rather than javascript to "anti-spam" encode mailto links?

I have found several javascripts bits to encode a mailto link so spiders can't snatch the email address. However, I would much prefer using php than javascript.

Would anyone know how to do this? I've searched this site (and others) for the solution but haven't seemed to be able to find it anywhere.

I ought to say I'm pretty much a newbie to php.

Won't work. PHP is processed on the server. You can obsfuscate all you want server-side, but if you deliver up intact email addresses to the Web browser, the spiders will get 'em.

I just so hate javascript. Always have :-o Part of the main issue with it is that it is less than accessible for folks with disabilities, in particular those using screen reading software that don't handle javascript very well, if at all.

The latest version of Jaws does handle Javascript, but at nearly $1000 US per copy, people tend to use their software until long after it's lived its useful life :-(
