After a few moths, I have finally released a new version of my message board software. It is programmed in PHP and uses a MySQL database. Please take a look at it here: http://www.gravityboardx.com

A CSS-based layout is much better than a tabular layout.

Please elaborate...It uses a customizable CSS layout configurable through the administrator control panel, so I'm not sure what you mean.

You have used tables to position everything on the page. However, since I don't see any border=0 anywhere it should be quite fine....not the greatest thing to do but it's better than invisible tables.

Hmm...I see. And no, as far as I can remember, it doesn't use invisible tables anywhere. But other than the tables, how do you like it?

For the few pages I went through, the first major downfall is the reliance of register_globals being on. To add to Merve's standard's comment, you aren't using a valid doctype, and most of this html won't validate against a DTD.

I'm just curious how you can tell that register_globals are on? What's the trick?

I'd also recommend that you not only test this thing on IE. Your image slices are cracking up on me and I'm willing to bet it's because you only look at this thing in IE. I could be wrong however.

Full CSS for the layout - if you don't do it now, you will be doing it in a couple months from now. This doesn't mean that you can't use tables for some smaller things, but the days of full table layouts are basically over.

I will take a look at that site...What browser are you using? It looks great for me in IE6, and nearly the same in the most recent version of Opera, however in opera there is a little bit more room around the tables.

Some of the pages post to $PHP_SELF instead of $SERVER['PHP_SELF']. They also don't reference the variables as $POST['something'], but rather just $something. No extract done on the page or functionality to extract.

I think I understand...So my variable names have to be $SERVER['something'] $POST['something'] etc. so that with register globals off it will recognize where the variables are coming from. That shouldn't be too hard to do. 🙂

Read up on [man]register_globals[/man]. With as many pages are involved, it would take a bit of time to convert it all, but well worth it. PHP now comes standard with register_globals turned off, and a lot of people leave it this way for security reasons. If you code expecting it to be off, it will work regardless. But if you code expecting it to be on, it will only work if it's on...

I'm a mac person, but from a hell-of-alot-of-testing (times a billion) recently (on both pc and mac), I've come to rely upon Firebird (now Firefox) and Safari v1.2 to get things pretty correct (when using compliant code and stuff).

Oh, are you saying you downloaded the code and read it? I thought you were able to tell just from visiting the website.
