Tracking Members

Well I think i figured out how some sites do something like:

Members Online: 29
Total Online: 56

They do that by sessions right, and passing session data through mysql? Or am I completely wrong? Anyways, how do I count the total number of sessions active?

Excellent question! You hit it right on the head man. Yeah they use sessions. However I asked earlier how you can count all the sessions but man I couldn't get a good answer on it. What I did for my chatroom I built was that it logged as a session, then added the name to the database, had a script that saw if they have been inactive for over 20 min and erased their name if so. If they tried to post and their name has been erased it would prompt them to log back in. Basically elimiating the people who just sit there and watch. You know the type. Sorry I can't give you a decent answer. 🙁

Well the script that erased the name? How did that execute? By CRON?

I had mine running everytime the script updated. Hince no cron job on a Windows box. <-- Least that I know. So it runs on a .inc everytime the code runs. So they can get one more post before they time out. 🙂 If it's not about my code then sorry... I have no idea then.
