password protect

I was wondering if you can use php to user/password protect pages?
If so can anyone help me with it because i need to make a staff page with a username and password (that i can delete accounts if needed) and i have no idea how to do anything like this.
Any help would be great.

i checked out the script on www.hotscripts.com called vauthenticate.

it maybe something you are looking for.
