Date Problem

Hi All,

I have a script that displays up and coming birthdays. eg. if someones birthdate is 2003-02-12, would be displayed as Saturday 21 February. Now the problem I am having is if someones birthyear is before 1970 something weird is happening, so e.g. birthdate 1969-02-14 gets displayed as Friday 31 December. If I change the year to 1970, it displaye the right month and day Saturday 14 February. I have attached my code and would appreciate if anyone could offer some help on this.

just you can't use the timestamp.

unix timestamps are the number of seconds that have elapsed since the firs epoch (1970-01-01) therefore any date before then is either going to be undefined or zero (or negative maybe?). So, your problem lies with the mktime and then the use of $timestamp. A solution may be to use date('l n F',$timestamp) I think date understands timestamps from before 1970, not sure though.

Use mysql's own date functions to format the date:

$result = mysql_query("SELECT *, DATE_FORMAT(birthday,'%W %d %M') AS bday from users WHERE (DAYOFYEAR(birthday)) - DAYOFYEAR(CURDATE()) < '10' and (DAYOFYEAR(birthday)) - DAYOFYEAR(CURDATE()) > 0 ORDER BY  (DAYOFYEAR(birthday)) - DAYOFYEAR(CURDATE()) ASC");

Later on you can echo that birthday from $result_ar2['bday']. Aint that neat? 🙂

cahva - So If I understand correctly, once I have extracted the date from the database in the format I want, I would still use the date array to split the date and then use the mktime so that the I can add current year so that the birthday that is displayed would be correct?

No no.. You dont have to use PHP for this at all! Just use the date_format in mysql-query.

DATE_FORMAT(birthday,'%W %d %M %Y') would get you result(for example): Saturday 14 February 1979.

O k thats cool, but the part the I was origionally batling with is that I need to dsiplay the users birdate for the current year. At the moment that would should me when he was born, but what i need to do is show the day of his birthday this year from the info I have in the database. so e.g. if the date I have stored in my database for someones birthday is 14-02-1976, I would like to display Saturday 14 February.
