I want to send a text message to a person's mobile when a certain situation occurs.

I can send emails OK; but if I try to use the mobile phone number as the address, I get a bad destination error message.

Any ideas how to get my email into the text message network?

Sounds like you're not passing a valid email address. You must add the domain of the provider's mail-to-SMS gateway in the form ####@.tld. For example, if [phone] is a valid T-Mobile USA phone number,

mail('[e-mail],'this is a subject', 'this is a message');

will work.
