PHP for Camera Phone Blogging

I have project that I have been working on that randomly (some what) decontructs and reconstructs 25 images that I take daily. I am using some GD library stuff to achieve this. I want to be able to use my camera phone to email photos into my PHP application and post the images as I take them. Anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do with PHP or perhaps with my server to achieve this?

Ohhh! Weeeeellll, first you're going to have to have a pop3 account somewhere. Right, if you have a hunt around I'm sure you'll find a class that sorts out all the pop3 stuff but this is basically what's going to happen.
Make a connection to your pop3 server using fsockopen (usually on port 110) then you'll have to manage the conversation with the server.
I believe the conversation goes something like this (me=> is me pop3=>is the pop3 server)
pop3=>+OK
me=>USER username
pop3=>+OK
me=>PASS password
pop3=>+OK
me=>STAT
pop3=>+OK 5 23423 (the first one is the number of mails the second is the total size)
me=>LIST
pop3=>+OK
pop3=>mail1 1024
pop3=>mail2 1024
pop3=>anothermail 1024
pop3=>heres another 1024
pop3=>lastmail 19327
pop3=>.
me=>RETR 1
pop3=>+OK
contents of the email

Now if you want your emailed photos to be paced up not long after you've emailed them you'll have to set up the script on a cron job so that it connects and checks the pop3 server every few minutes.

I'm not sure how binary files as attachments are dealt with but they may be pretty trick.

That helps me find my starting point. Anyone know of any open source projects that do something like this? Or does anyone ahve some code snippets to share?

Would it perhaps be easier if I had a unique email address and set up some script (any kind, not sure the best solution) on the server to send all attachment files to a specific directory?

i am looking into doing the same thing.

i found something like suggested above and here is the files in zip.

it is a cleaner scripts that emptys your inbox, has the same principles to connect and show you how many emails you have in your inbox.

so i am playing around with it to see if i can show the email and/or get it to a database.

i am also looking to strip out only the images and store them in a databse then call it to show on a page. a mini moblog of somesort.

I also found a really great set of scripts taht I successfully modified and stripped out the images for use with another project.

I use ripmime and galleryadd.pl to pipe incoming email with file attachments to Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/).

I have found T-Mobile USA's MMS support to be somewhat flaky and wound up configuring my Nokia's email program to talk directly with my own SMTP mail server.

If you are looking for an example of how to post photos from your camera phone to your server using PHP, chck out MMS Scripts from Stefan Hellkvist at http://hellkvist.org/. Stefan works for Ericsson in Stockholm and does some pretty intersting stuff, which he openly shares on his site.
