Resize/Optimize pics, create gallery on the fly???

I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a system that will allow my client to keep his inventory of new and used boats up to date. I want him to be able to upload pictures to a directory, then have them resized, optimized, and a new html page created on the fly. Is this even possible with php, or do I need to run some type of server side app?

If you've ever used Photoshop or Dreamweaver's web photo album feature, that is exactly what I am looking for...

There are plenty of prebuilt gallery scripts available on places like http://www.hotscripts.com/, http://www.phpclasses.org/, and no doubt others. Maybe you could adapt one of those to your purpose, or at least get implementation ideas for one of your own.

I checked out a bunch at hotscripts.com already, and installed one, but I'm having trouble finding one that will actually resize and optimize the images.
