Cookies or sessions for a forum

Hi
I am looking to make a forum for a website, mainly through boredom and wanting to learn more about PHP, i was wondering which method of storing logon data wud be better for a foru, sessions or cookies?

I would suggest to use a cookie to store the username. so when the user comes back, his username is at least there.
use a session to keep track that the user has successfully logged in and is active.
i would never store the password in a cookie.
