[Resolved] counting the amount of records

I put together a database that allows you enter your name and pick your favourite coloured ball from a drop down menu, dont laugh I am still learning.

I would like to know how you can count the amount of records in the table and show how many there is of each colour all one page for example

There are (4) yellow balls
There are (5) green balls
There are (3) blue balls

SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ball WHERE ball_color='red'

You could also make it more flexible like this:

$result= mysql_query("SELECT distinct(ball_color) FROM ball");
while( $row = mysql_fetch_array($result) )
{
     $sub_result = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ball WHERE ball_color=$row[0]");
     $sub_row = mysql_fetch_row($sub_result);
     echo($row[0] . ": " . $sub_row[0]
}
