how to setup a reply message

I wrote a small little private messaging system for my website using PHP & mySQL. Everything is working fine except I can't figure out how to get the body text that I'm replying to, to show up nicely in the reply textbox like this:

No sorry I can't this weekend.
-MW
-------$username said:----------
do you want to play paintball this weekend?

Instead it comes back like:

No sorry I can't this weekend -MW----------------- do you want to play paintball this weekend?

I'm using a multiline form textbox. Ideas?

Thanks for the function. I read the php.net definition and examples and I dont quite understand how to format this to place it in the database and then pull it back out for display.

Place it in the database like you are. When you pull it out and echo/print it, use the function

echo nl2br($text);
