events page: separated by month and with navigation

Hello,

I'm trying to show events from one select query but seperated by months i.e.

Jan
event
event

Feb
event
event
event

Mar
event...etc for a year

and then have a recordset navigation at the bottom, say 10 events per page.

I have no problem displaying events in date order with recordset navigation but don't know how to make it print the name of the month each time it comes to a new month. I only really want one select query, unless it's possible to have navigation through several recordsets at once, if that makes sense??

I'm not sure whether I should be concentrating on the select query or the code for the recordset; none of my attempts have worked so far, except on my sanity!

Can anyone help or should I post more info??

You need to test for change of month between last record and this.

$lastMonth = '';
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
   if ($row['month'] != $lastMonth )
          echo '<br>' . $row['month'] . '<br>';

   echo $row['event'] . '<br>' ;

   $lastMonth = $row['month'];
}

God it's so simple; I danced around that idea for two days but just couldn't get it right, kept making little mistakes that when you're on your own don't jump out at you. Thanks so much x
