Hi 🙂 I'm new to php and mysql, and was wondering if there's an actual very basic tutorial on getting started. I really have no clue on what's going on with it. The only coding I know is HTML, Visual Basic and some DHTML.

Should I take a class to learn php and mysql or is it easy enough to learn on your own?

Just wanted some input. I'll appreciate any advice/input given.

Buy a book... Read it all the way through, then all you need is the php manual http://www.php.net/manual. If you know Visual basic, you shouldn't have a problem with PHP (even though they are completely different).

This is an excellent site to start if you're not looking to buy a book. Personally, I've come very far in the PHP book by reading articles/tutorials on the following sites:
- www.phpbuilder.com (obviously)
- www.phpfreaks.com (very useful for intermediate bits)
- www.devshed.com (all levels of scripting)

It may also interest you to know that I've started a web site of my own in which I'm offering the complete basics of PHP and upwards in terms of tutorials. The Part 2 of my first tutorial is going up tonight.

Basically, it explains how to create a simple guestbook application! 🙂

To learn PHP make sure you ignore everything that VB has taught you in its bad programming habits. Also read the stickied threads here they will help a lot from popular topics
