Forums /session cookie/ user cookie

We are building a website with many elements and one of them is forums.
We were thinking of using open source system (like phpbb)

Can we integrate the login and session control of the forum system with the
Login and permissions of the website.

We don't want the users to register twice.
And by sending them user cookie we will control the permissions.
