I recently downloaded Apache 2.0, but haven't installed it yet.

I wondered if I could actually execute files on apache behind my dynamic ip address. I only want the server for personal and learning uses. To load and test scripting files before loading them on a hosted server. Can I run apache behind my ipaddress, by using maybe something like so; http://60.103.29.98/index.html

If posible, how can I do this? Any tips for a beginner?

why not just use localhost? if its just for dev.....

Sounds good, how can I use that? When I installed, use "localhost" in the dns and domain name fields? Is it simply localhost, or @?

Or even just http://127.0.0.1/page.html - any self-respecting web server should understand that address.

Well, I've tried to install in several times. Don't seem to be working right. The monitor claims 'All Services running', but http://127.0.0.1/ gives me a page error. So does localhost/

Any one have a idea what I'm doing wrong? When I installed, I used 127.0.0.1 for "network domain" and " server domain.
I don't get it?

What OS you running? I have heard other people have had problems when running win98 trying to install Apache 2. I had problems too, though that was over a year ago so I don't know what version it was. But yea, if you have win98 you should already have a server called PWS or IIS4.

I'm running WinXP pro, with Service Pack 1 installed.

I also have "Internet Connection Firewall" turned on, on the dial up settings.

Internet connection firewall won't cause a problem since you're not leaving your box.

What does the error say? Is it an apache error, or a "page cannot be displayed" error? Is the service started? Goto a command prompt and type "net start apache2" or "net start apache" (whatever you named the apache service) just to make sure.

you've already got something listening on port 80 then

"could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:8080" Huh?! Why is it trying to bind to that address? I'd check your httpd.conf file and make sure it's set to listen on port 80. 8080 is typically used for proxy servers... do you have proxy server software installed on your machine (I don't see why you would)?

I had installed a port blocker, a few weeks ago. While it wasn't active at the time, it still seemed to effect it. When I uninstalled it and removed all the registry keys for it, Apache loaded fine. And localhost works fine, the test page came up. So I'm all ok there.

Now comes installing php, and asp.. and mysql and etc. I've already downloaded PHP, the CGI Installer. Which is better to use though? API, or CGI? Like I said, it will be just for development uses.

Definitely install it as a module in Apache. The CGI version has limitations.

Does anyone actually use the CGI version of PHP anymore?

I did last week till the PC crashed on me, as long as your not going live CGI isnt all that bad unless you want to have the extensions avaliable to you.
