Short Get URLs

I have seen replacements for:
http://www.foo.tld/baz.php?id=143
that look like this:
http://www.foo.tld/baz.php/143

How is this possible? Does it require special setup in apache or is it relatively easy to do?

If I can work this out, together with MultiViews, I could get my URIs to look like:

http://www.foo.tld/baz/143

You can do with a PHP script, but it is much easier to use an apache mod rewrite. Google and you will find it.

I take it that this wont be easy, but the article at DevShed seems to be very close to target! Btw, I would be interested to see how you do it with a script, as it too would be very helpful.

The mod rewrite is a little confusing, but you can easily find premade examples, and then edit to your needs.

The php scripting is not very exciting. All you do is get the URL, and then chop off the domain and tld, and then explode it based on "/". It get's messy if you want to try and respect query strings as well.

If you have a URL that looks like this:
http://www.foo.tld/baz.php/143
$_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] will contain "/143".
For the simple stuff you don't need mod_rewrite. Though it is worth learning mod_rewrite anyway; it can come in handy.
