Strange Error

I have a question on an error that I have never seen before. I have been working on a tournament section to be built into my vbulletin at www.starcraftdream.com. Basically it was working pretty good last night, but then I went to refresh it without changing any coding and this happened:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/affro/public_html/tourney2056/index.php on line 238

My room mate and I have been working with php for about 3 years each and never seen this error. Line 238 is a date command, but it can't be the server because vbulletin uses the date command and it all still works fine. Please lemme know if you have any advice because we are stumped. Thanks everyone!

I've gotten this error in 2 situations:

Endless loop.
While ($i<500){
//forgot to increment $i++;
}
Too much data being returned: Expected to return about 100 rows from a database but the query actually returned about 100,000 rows, which took the slow server too long to format. Usually this problem shows up as a memory exceeded error.

My guess is it's number 1.

PS. I get this error even when I "haven't changed any code." In fact I just THOUGHT I hadn't changed any code. I added a comment or moved a brace or copied and pasted, and by mistake took out the $i++ type command.

Scour your looping code for items that might not result in a 'true' escape condition.

Don't worry too much about what is on line 238, look at your structure around line 238. Are you in a loop? Is it infinetly looping? Is there too much work to do?

Also, to increase the max execution time, use this function:

set_time_limit(60);
