Needed: htaccess rundown

I am tired and my brain is fried. Could someone please explain this htaccess thing to me.

Here is what I want to do.

First there is a sign up script which will pass the username they want to the scipt that proccesses it all. In the proccessing script it will create a random password, then md5 hash it and write the username and password to a htaccess file. I am probably way off on this. But I also need to know how to read from the htaccess file to pull usernames and passwords to gather information from the DB with.

Hmm. That doesn't make sense. You're far better off storing the usernames and passwords in the database in the first place, and secondly, .htaccess wouldn't be needed for this, just a few lines of php code.

Take a look at www.phpfreaks.com, under their tutorials, you'll find a tutorial on creating a membership system, when I was starting off, this worked for me. 🙂

The reason I wanted htaccess was so I didnt have usernames and passwords in the DB.
