Ok, call me really stupid if you will, but I haven't the foggiest clue about what I'm doing here. Anyway, I want to install gnome on my server (debian) I've downloaded the package and want it to run on startup. Is there anything else I need (I've seen something mentioned about xfree86. whats this??)

You're in for a massive undertaking if you plan to do this from the packages. XFree86 is the common program to run GUI applications. Best explanation here. Gnome is just the desktop GUI to run on XFree86. It's comparable to changing your theme in Windows. Now, I only set this up on servers that I'm going to run Oracle on, or my desktops, none of which are Debian, but I'd like to think that you could apt-get the neccesary packages all put together in a nice .deb for you. Otherwise, the dependancies alone for X will have you pulling your hair out in no time...

Not sure about deb. In redhat you can boot from CD and upgrade. This will check and fix all dependancies.
