What with all the damn windows ads?? As I write this I have 3 identical peices of propaganda flickering away on my screen.

Why do I call it propaganda? Its a survey/study/waste of space created by a company sponsered by micro$oft. So of course it will be totally unbiased.

BTW do you know what MSCE stands for?

It just seems that old micro$oft is desperate to prove that they are the best.

I ask one question which would you have

a system that is sometimes stable, maybe secure and expensive to set up. But once set up any monkey can maintain it

or linux running apache/php?

Nothing really It was a joke.

Ok let me state for the record that I have no problem with MSCE/MCSA. They are perfectly acceptable qualifications. They are just something connected with micro$oft that you can rag on.

Its just like me calling microsoft, micro$oft or microshite.

Its nothing personal. 🙂

Some operating systems weren't as good as others... (my point here is 95 was terrible in comparison to 3.1 and ME was terrible in comparison to 98) however, I've found that all of their latest operating systems, namely 2000, XP Prof and 2003 have all been reliable and very stable.

I've had my XP Prof machine running for over 3 months without problems, and I only restarted the machine then because I needed to install some new software.

Besides this though, I'm not saying Linux is bad by any means. In fact I prefer the PHP language to asp.net, however this is only because I came across this site, I did start out on asp.net

Anyway, Microsoft = great and Red Hat in my view = great for hosting.

TBCH, MS do make good server software. Although I haven't tried W2K3 yet, 2000 server is excellent and (dare I say it) stable.

I think I need to restart it once a fortnight or something like that.

However, my server @ home runs rings around it for stability. I know the uptime is only 20 days at the moment, but the most is about 50 days. And that was because we had a power cut and I don't own a UPS :rolleyes:

Well, as I said all stable. I've noticed massive improvements as they've gone on, and although yes there are lots of security fixes for Windows, they are making them and you'd all be on Linux if they weren't.

But heck! I'm happy somebody somewhere can talk about Microsoft without saying something completely against them. Open source is a good idea, but I don't mind paying for software like Red Hat of Microsoft Windows, in my opinion, they're both just as good. 🙂

I find that with MS products they are only as good as the person managing them. If you get a good manager its a perfectly acceptable server. If you get some one who has difficulties finding there backside with both hands your in trouble.

Linux servers are very simular but do have differences. For example a good manager will be able to upgrade when required. A bad manager on linux will flounder. Its not very forgiving and one option supplied wrong can cause a mayor headache.

That goes without saying. Also, the software you use depends on what job you want it to do. My own server is really only a webserver that will run PHP scripts and a MySQL db. I don't want to run ASP scripts (thats what work's server is for 😃 ). Therefore, I use Linux because running PHP on it is more secure and stable. If I wanted to write ASP scripts, I'd put windows on it.
