Autoresponder not working?

I'm very new to PHP and am trying to set up a site for a friend using a classified script written in PHP.

What I'd like to so, is have an automated responce email sent to a user AFTER they've submitted an advertisment in a classified category.

I've set up an e-mail account and an autoresponder, which does work IF you send e-mail to the address directly -- but it doesn't work if you submit an ad through the form on the site. (The autoresponder is not sent).

Is there anyone out there who can possibly help me figure this out?

for learning sake, I would say download phpBB and take a look at its emailer functions....

or you could look on www.php.net and read up on mail() and for the script that "registers the ad" or whatever, have it send the email once its finished...
