i've been using skype (www.skype.com) to talk to my mates using voice-over-ip. Now i'm doing my boring coursework, and thought i'd invite you all to skype me!

mate i've been astounded! the call quality is amazing, with no latency at all. i've only used it with a handfull of people, most of which are computer geeks, but even my ex-gf managed to work it without any problems. There is no microphone calibration, no feedback, nothing. It's jaw-dropping!

Anyway, i'm not on commission, so download it and click the skype-me button (which may or may not work in non-IE browsers)

Bah, no Linux or Mac version. Looks like the only VOIP contact I'll have for some time will be the Cisco IP Phone on my desk. 😛

There's allways WOW-Talk! it has a better codec than skype, which allows people to talk without lag even over a 56k line ... apparently

Now for some honesty. There is nowhere near the kind of userbase and there's no *nix or Mac versions (and no plans to release them either 🙁)

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass or anything, but just how is it better? I know nothing about 'codecs' but I've been curious for years.

The only problem is that you have to pay (albeit £1.99 a month). Skype is free. And you can place calls to landlines too, for what approximates to 1p a minute. Thats 1p a minute for me to call anyone in Argentina (Buenos Aires), Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Canada (mobiles), Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico (Mexico City, Monterrey), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg), Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States (except Alaska and Hawaii), United States (mobiles) and last but not least: Vatican.

How cool is that??

They manage to pack it better (either by more efficient compression or by loosing more sound) so that less bandwidth is required to have a conversation. That's how they manage to have it work well over 56k.

You can call land lines in any country with WOW-talk! as well. Also, if I remember correctly, the £1.99 goes onto your phone account. It's just a garuntee that you'll use the phone a minimum amount per month. I don't know why I'm supporting this so adamantly. We were all given free accounts in the office for the corporate version, On Instant, but we never use it. Not least because there's no one on it.
