[Resolved] unexpected T_BOOLEAN_OR

Yeah, I'm still working with this, lol. I just don't give up that easily. I'm getting the unexpected T_BOOLEAN_OR on line 40 and did a search for it here but what came up didn't give any help as to what to look for to fix it. Just going to give partial code that hopefully has enough for someone to give me direction. Include files aren't listed but dbconnect.php is included.
Oh and this is the posting script for a form.

Thanks so much Pig. That worked. I got a question. My form checks seem to be FINALLY working but now I need to format the error msgs the correct color, font, size, etc. Last time I did this, nothing worked lol. I just need a heads up on the "correct" way to format a line like the one below:

  echo "The NickName you have entered for the Referred By field is not valid.   Please choose a different NickName or check your spelling!<br />";

    exit(); 
}

This code is also in the same posting script for my form. I just don't want to fight with it for days on end again, lol. One line will show me what I need to do and I will run with it.

You mean how to make the message stand out? I always use CSS.

Then you can define the class in the same document like:
<style>
.error{
color:red;
font-weight:bold;
}
</style>
or in a separate style sheet.

Dang Pig, lol. I have everything else set up in CSS. I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier. BUT, even if I had, I haven't see CSS used in any php/mysql tutorials to date so it would have never been thought of on my part, lol. AND, I probably would have done it WRONG as usual, omg, it's soooo sad, lol.
