encrypting .htaccess

Hello. As usual two questions:

1.)
Can someone give me a SIMPLE function that encrypts a password that can be written to a .htpasswd file (no random creation of anything)

2.)
Can I convert already md5ed passwords into the .htaccess password format?

Dunno bout an actual function as I never found one out, but there's gotta be a way as this site does it.
